According to traditional Chinese medicine, the human body is filled with lines or channels through which the energy of the body flows. These channels function as points of entry into the body, called acupuncture points. Acupuncture is the practice of inserting fine sterile stainless steel needles into these points to remove blockages and imbalance in the body’s energy flow. Removing these blockages allows energy and blood to circulate smoothly throughout the body which results in the stimulation of the body to heal itself.

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine method that uses the heat generated by the burning herbal preparations containing artemisia vulgaris (mugwort) to stimulate acupuncture points that can treat many diseases.
There are multiple styles such as direct and indirect moxibustion. In direct moxibustion, a small cone-shaped amount of mugwort is put on an acupuncture point and burned this direct moxibustion is further divided into scarring and non-scarring with scarring moxibustion, the moxa is placed on an acupuncture point and burns until it causes blisters and scarring, what we in medicine would call a deep-partial-thickness second degree burn. With no-scarring moxibustion, the burning moxa is removed before it burns the skin.
Indirect moxibustion is more popular form since there is a lower risk of pain or burning. Patients want to avoid second degree burns, with indirect moxibustion a moxa cigar is held over the skin until the area turns red.
Another form of indriect moxibustion uses both acupuncture needles and moxa. A needle is inserted into an acupoint then the needles are wrapped with moxa and lit so that the needles heat can be transferred to the skin.
